Does anyone have some good site references for a marketer on what social sites to use and why when you're just starting out with social networking?

I know to use Sphinn for Marketing, for example, and to also use it because you have a higher chance at being on the main page (exposure) and its a targeted site. It gives greater visibility chances than let's say: Digg.com or Reddit.com as they are broader and getting on the main page is well -- let's just say tough to none unless you have something very compelling in the user's eyes.

Adding on to this, but saying Digg.com is good, is simply it's good for SEO purposes and "people know it." So, leave it in the mix. It's part of branding and familiarity. It also has broad categories, so why not leave it?

Current seems to be for rich media only (videos). If you don't have them in at least 10 - 20% of your content, then why even have it as an option at all. If you do, then you should have it as an option most likely. Specially if your content consists mainly of rich media!

Etc., perhaps with more statistics (viewership vs. click through, etc. -- which I know is hard to measure, but just perhaps on average?)...

So, was just a sampling. I could put together a report myself, but I'm wondering if something already exists.

Is there a web page or multiple web pages that help compile something like this with the other services involved such as Mixx, Newsvine, Yahoo! Buzz, del.icio.us, Facebook, Technorati, Furl, Propeller, StumpleUpon, ma.noglia (which I hear is gaining traction), etc. Or at least the major players and some/most of the smaller players.

    Anything would be helpful.

    Sincerely,

    Craig

  2. Hello,

We've discussed putting together an analysis giving a background on each of the services we offer in a centralized location. Knowing that there is a request for it, we'll revisit the project. Thanks for the feedback.

We did release some statistics on overall sharing activity in August you might find beneficial: http://blog.sharethis.com/?p=92
