I recognize the need for UTF-8, I'm just not getting it to work right, I guess.

The link you reference is just some web page that says they converted from UTF-8 to ISO-8859-1 in order to have Outlook display correctly. Well, that doesn't help me much since I have no control over what ShareThis does. Also, there is an "Encoding" option in Outlook that lets you change the encoding used for a message. Switching to UTF-8 made no difference.

Regardless, even if I send to a Hotmail account (instead of Outlook), the characters are not appearing correctly. I'm trying to send an "é" (low e with accent aigu) and it is coming out as "?(C)" in the Subject and "é" (cap A with tilde, followed by copyright symbol) in the message body. FYI, the "preview" option in the ShareThis window shows me the incorrect characters "é" (cap A with tilde, followed by copyright symbol) as well. Incidentally, if I include the "é" in the optional message field of the ShareThis window, it shows correctly in the body of the received message.

I don't know if it matters, but the title of the URL being shared is actually supplied by a Flash application before being passed on to the ShareThis API. If I use a JavaScript "alert()" function to check the text, it appears correctly.

Anyone have a complete sample that includes the UTF-8 conversion functions and is believed to correctly support non US characters?

Hi jbruce,

ShareThis uses UTF-8 encoding for all shared content because this is the global standard and we have no way of determining the encoding of your web page (Outlook in this case). Outlook does not automatically render characters in UTF-8, for additional information see http://justaddwater.dk/2007/11/21/converting-utf-8-data-to-outlook-compatible-charset/

While I can't exactly determine what is being said in the original post, it seems related to my issue. I apologize in advance to the original poster for hijacking the thread if it is not the same issue.

I too have an application that attempts to share content with Japanese titles. More specifically, my titles are mixed English/Japanese. Even though I use the recommended utf8 encoding functions, the resulting email message generated by the ShareThis Send/Email feature does not appear correctly in Outlook. If I take the desired title and paste it into a Hotmail message and send it, I get the following header data in Outlook:
Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-2022-jp"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

And the resulting text message looks correct.

The header data I get from the ShareThis message is:
Content-Type: text/html; charset="UTF-8"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

And the results don't look correct. I correctly see the English portion of the title, but the Japanese portion is a bunch of latin characters (like the letters "a" and "e") with diacritics (umlaut, grave, etc.) above and below.

Has anyone had success using ShareThis with nonlatin character sets?

Hi we have a small wp plugin for sharethis website. and we have a Japanese text at site.. so whan we want to share a content.. we are going to page

http://sharethis.com/item?&wp=2.5.1&publisher=&title=%E3%82%A2%E3%83%95%E3%83%AA%E3%82%AB%E9%A3%9F%E7%B3%A7%E5%AE%89%E5%85%A8%E4%BF%9D%E9%9A%9C%E3%81%AB%E9%96%A2%E3%81%99%E3%82%8B%E6%8F%90%E8%A8%80&url=http%3A%2F%2Fdev.ourworld.unu.edu%2Fjp%2F2008%2F07%2F22%2Fcall-for-action-on-african-food-security%2F

whitch is acctualy contain a JP text. but no encoding sent, so it think that its utf-8 page... it looks ugly and corrypted...

can sharethis developers present at least a key (charset) for query string to set a charset (in my case utf8) to show a correct content?
