"We are aware of this issue with using a third party JavaScript library with our highly distributable application and rectifying this with our backend redesign to be out soon."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears your code still uses Mootools. Thus everyone who uses prototype or jquery still runs into these problems, yes?

I recognize the need for UTF-8, I'm just not getting it to work right, I guess.

The link you reference is just some web page that says they converted from UTF-8 to ISO-8859-1 in order to have Outlook display correctly. Well, that doesn't help me much since I have no control over what ShareThis does. Also, there is an "Encoding" option in Outlook that lets you change the encoding used for a message. Switching to UTF-8 made no difference.

Regardless, even if I send to a Hotmail account (instead of Outlook), the characters are not appearing correctly. I'm trying to send an "é" (low e with accent aigu) and it is coming out as "?(C)" in the Subject and "é" (cap A with tilde, followed by copyright symbol) in the message body. FYI, the "preview" option in the ShareThis window shows me the incorrect characters "é" (cap A with tilde, followed by copyright symbol) as well. Incidentally, if I include the "é" in the optional message field of the ShareThis window, it shows correctly in the body of the received message.

I don't know if it matters, but the title of the URL being shared is actually supplied by a Flash application before being passed on to the ShareThis API. If I use a JavaScript "alert()" function to check the text, it appears correctly.

Anyone have a complete sample that includes the UTF-8 conversion functions and is believed to correctly support non US characters?

Hi jbruce,

ShareThis uses UTF-8 encoding for all shared content because this is the global standard and we have no way of determining the encoding of your web page (Outlook in this case). Outlook does not automatically render characters in UTF-8, for additional information see http://justaddwater.dk/2007/11/21/converting-utf-8-data-to-outlook-compatible-charset/

While I can't exactly determine what is being said in the original post, it seems related to my issue. I apologize in advance to the original poster for hijacking the thread if it is not the same issue.

I too have an application that attempts to share content with Japanese titles. More specifically, my titles are mixed English/Japanese. Even though I use the recommended utf8 encoding functions, the resulting email message generated by the ShareThis Send/Email feature does not appear correctly in Outlook. If I take the desired title and paste it into a Hotmail message and send it, I get the following header data in Outlook:
Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-2022-jp"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

And the resulting text message looks correct.

The header data I get from the ShareThis message is:
Content-Type: text/html; charset="UTF-8"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

And the results don't look correct. I correctly see the English portion of the title, but the Japanese portion is a bunch of latin characters (like the letters "a" and "e") with diacritics (umlaut, grave, etc.) above and below.

Has anyone had success using ShareThis with nonlatin character sets?

I installed ShareThis to my wordpress installation. I'm using a custom theme I built with a couple of jquery corner rounding actions that happen inside of a $(document).ready() method call. If I remove the statement and just place the cornering functions in a script tag at the bottom of the document, it works. But if I have that document ready method ANYWHERE in the document (header or content, wherever) then ShareThis gets a "SHARETHIS is undefined" error and the page won't even load.

Anyone know what would cause this?

whitch is acctualy contain a JP text. but no encoding sent, so it think that its utf-8 page... it looks ugly and corrypted...

can sharethis developers present at least a key (charset) for query string to set a charset (in my case utf8) to show a correct content?

Hi Mystalic,

If you are trying to have two different ShareThis buttons on a page open up to different customized widgets, this is not possible with our current product.

If you are just trying to have a ShareThis button open up to a widget with the email tab, then the src for your query string should work.

The .addEntry function specifies the shared content. So when a user would share something from your .addEntry function to email it would arrive as:

Email
[url of the page the button is hosted on]
Email this article to your friends.

Hey,

First of all, I'm sure these are simple questions, but I'm new to AddThis and I'm not a Javascript programmer (I understand the basics of programming though).

I want to create a separate ShareThis just for emailing articles. So of course I created a new button that only has email options (thus it's designed just for people to email their friends and for us to track the stats). I'm having trouble putting that together with custom code that would have the text "Email This" and an email/envelope icon.

I'm basing a lot of the customization off of the API: http://support.sharethis.com/developers/developers-faq/stapi/62

And lastly, is there any way to default it to "email" instead of "view all"? I know they both work the same, but it may confuse people regardless.

Thank you so much.
- Ben

I'm a design student with an interest in web design and development, so my blog is completely hand-coded to further my understanding of the mechanics behind web pages. I've been looking to syndicate, which drew me to ShareThis. The problem is, I do not understand the Javascript that accompanies the button. I've read all the information on the ShareThis site... but still no go.

I'm wondering what tag displays what information when you share across sites like Facebook and MySpace. What tag displays the title of the post? Which one the thumbnail?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried using the 'embeds' and 'popup' API options? The 'embeds' stops the Flash from being disabled when the widget is actuated, and 'popup' allows the widget to load in a new popup window. This keeps the Flash from bleeding through into the widget iFrame.

I have functionality in terms of it initially appearing but right after it disappears before my very eyes. If I resize the window it reappears quickly but is gone again in an instant. Any ideas?

Hello,

We do not have a flash widget as of yet, but your can create a flash object and bind the ShareThis functionality to it. The entire ShareThis service is comprised of JavaScript, so it's a matter of binding the API ( http://sharethis.com/developers ) to a Flash button. The ShareThis widget will then load in a popup window. For instruction see: http://support.sharethis.com/developers/developers-faq/stapi/73

If you copy and paste code from the support site, please note that the quotation marks are not code-compliant.

I have followed the instructions exactly 2 times now for http://www.politicaldisgust.com

I downloaded the Share This plug in
I installed the folder in the plug in folder
I activated it in the plug in section
I went to the sharethis site and made my code and copied it and then pasted it into the options area in my admin panel as instructed

It still is not showing up at the bottom of each post.

I have uninstalled everything and tried again. still no luck. not sure what else to do.

any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
